If you speak with a winemaker long enough you're bound to hear the old saying that “great wine is made in the vineyard.” While it sounds somewhat simplistic it is absolutely true!
This, in no way diminishes the importance of the winemaker or the role we play in crafting truly unique wines. Instead it underscores the commitment required to insure that we have the very best product to work with.
Typically, wineries of our size contract to purchase fruit on a tonnage basis from an almost endless supply of grape growers. In fact, this is exactly what we did for the early years of our existence.
Wanting to gain even greater control over the grape growing and winemaking process we’ve chosen to take a slightly different approach. Over the last several years we’ve moved towards long-term leases where we actually manage and farm the land ourselves. In two recent cases we even planted the vineyard ourselves.
Ultimately we believe that this level of involvement will result in wines of an even higher quality since we will have control of the process from start to finish. At the end of the day, that’s all any winemaker can ever ask for.

Given our desire to control and manage the vineyards that we source fruit from it was almost preordained that Rolando would one day start his own vineyard management company. Drawing on his years of experience Rolando has assembled and trained a team of highly skilled employees that share his understanding that "great wines start in the vineyards."
It wasn't just the opportunity to control his own destiny that motivated Rolando into the farming aspect of the wine buiness. It was knowing that such an investment and commitment would eventually translate into raising the quality of the wines that he was able to produce.
Although still in its infancy, Herrera Vineyard Management will play an integral role in the long-term success and growth of our company. As opportunities continue to present themselves we are now in a position whereby we can become involved at the earliest stages. Greater familiarity with each vineyard will allow us to maximize the potential that each has to offer.
